About
My Wholesome Life
My Wholesome Life is a health and wellness website that offers recipe inspiration and health tips to those who are following (or are interested in) low-carb lifestyles. We are inspired by all things paleo, banting, keto, and even carnivore-related and offer the latest news and tips to our community. All these lifestyles are going against the grain of the traditional American food pyramid, turning it on its head, literally! There are many doctors, scientists, and nutritionists who are true advocates of these lifestyles. They practise what they preach and are reaping the benefits of living a low-carb life!
Low-carb living is more mainstream than you think. In South Africa, the medical scheme Momentum Health has partnered with Real Meal Revolution to offer its members a discount on the Real Meal Revolution online keto course.
At the centre of My Wholesome Life’s content are healthy recipes that are easy to prepare. We always try to minimise food waste as much as possible, and if there are perishable leftover ingredients, we’ll suggest alternative recipes or provide tips to reuse the product.

When did your low-carb journey begin?
My low-carb journey began in 2013 when I discovered Mark Sisson’s blog, Mark’s Daily Apple and the Primal Blueprint lifestyle. (Primal Blueprint is Sisson’s version of the paleo diet.) Coincidentally, that same year, the book Real Meal Revolution launched in South Africa, and the banting lifestyle (LCHF diet) took the country by storm. I was intrigued by both lifestyles as they both advocate eating clean, unprocessed foods. One, however, is lower in carbs and includes dairy products, and the other excludes dairy.
Who do you look up to in the low-carb community?
I thoroughly enjoy Mark Sisson’s blog. He and his editorial team put a lot of effort into their writing and everything is well-researched. I also look up to Professor Tim Noakes, Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt from Diet Doctor, Nutritionist Christine Cronau, Dr. Paul Saladino from CarnivoreMD, Dr. Eric Berg and Dr. Ken Berry, amongst many others.
How did My Wholesome Life come to be?
My Wholesome Life has brewed in my mind since 2016 (maybe even earlier) and has taken many shapes and forms. As a trained photographer and designer, my career as Creative Director evolved primarily around design and content creation. Occasionally, I photographed magazine or digital food content for our clients, and I thoroughly enjoyed those foody days. In 2019 I stepped into a life of freelance and it is around this time that the itch became itchier. However, I primarily focused on growing my freelance design career, working under the name Crisp Media. Fast forward to 2021; I decided to finally bring My Wholesome Life to life to explore my love for food photography and start my own digital media brand.
How is My Wholesome Life different from other low-carb blogs?
There are so many delicious recipes and fantastic food blogs out there, but something that always bugged me was food waste. Let’s say a recipe calls for half a red pepper only or 50ml of coconut cream. What do you do with the leftover red pepper or the remaining 350ml coconut cream? My Wholesome Life will try to avoid waste as much as possible and we’ll suggest other recipes if there are any leftovers. Times are also tough right now, so affordable recipes will be another focus.
Where do you get your recipe inspiration?
Let’s get one thing straight. 🙂 I’m not a trained or qualified chef. The closest I have to a food-related qualification is high school Home Economics (when that was still a thing). We made evil things like fudge, pancakes, choux pastry desserts, milk tarts – you name it. For now, I’m simply sharing my favourite recipes from my eight years in the low-carb/paleo world.
